Instructions (Read thoroughly)
The following stress chelation procedure is designed to reduce stress from disturbing adult memories. It is not to be used to address any childhood memories. If one of the participants starts to associate to a childhood trauma then this procedure should be stopped immediately. Childhood traumas should be handled only by a licensed mental health practitioner.
This procedure can be done with only 2 participants. One person is the chelator who is reducing his negative disturbance to an adult toxic memory. The other person is the partner who can use one hand to read instructions to the client and use the other hand to apply the eye-movement (EM) target. Each EM “set” consists of 20 back and forth sweeps with the partner’s fingers about 4 feet in front of the chelator’s face. The chelator holds his head steady while tracking the partner’s fingers with his eyes.
The following instructions in bold type should be read out load to the chelator. The instructions in regular type are only for the partner and should be read silently.
Before starting the procedure, both chelator and partner should practice the EM’s for a few moments. Make sure both of you are comfortable and make any adjustments necessary.
Recall and view sensory details of your upsetting memory…….sight, sound, scent, and especially any reactions in your body. We’ll call this your “target memory.” Spend at least a half minute getting all the details. Let me know when it’s all very clear.

Now rate the disturbance level of your target memory from zero to ten. Zero means no disturbance whatsoever and ten is the most excruciating disturbance you can imagine. This is your target’s “SUD score” …subjective units of disturbance.
(Partner records the score in a log)
This next step will be challenging. In any highly disturbing experience there's an irrational part of the mind that registers some shame. This is because the brain changes metabolism during intense emotion. The challenge will be to find the irrational shame thought about yourself that's below the surface. It might be something like “I’m weak”, “I’m guilty”, “I’m incompetent”, “I’m helpless”, “I’m unworthy”, etc. The phrase should start with “I”…… I’m something. Remember, it's not what's true. It's probably what you don't want to be true. You may need to wrestle past your logical side to get to your irrational unconscious. See if you can find that buried irrational thought.
(Partner - Do not proceed until he/she can come up with a phrase that sounds like it represents shame. It needs to be more emotional than just a factual statement.)
Now compose a contradictory positive thought that’s the opposite of the shame thought. For example it might be something like “I’m strong”, “I’m innocent”, “I’m powerful”, “I’m worthy”, etc.
Next, I'm going to ask for you to find three ADULT resource memories when you felt that the positive thought about yourself was absolutely true. They're not just any positive memory. Each one has to have a moment, like a 15 second scene, when its core meaning is the opposite of your challenging memory. You will need to be able to imagine yourself in the scene and at least feel some satisfaction. They don't have to be earth-shattering. It's also best if you don't describe each one in detail because we have alot to do. Just let me know when you can find each one.
(Partner - Wait for the chelator to find them. This will take a while. You can offer some moments from your own life for examples if you want. )
Now spend at least a minute imagining yourself in the most inspiring moment of your most uplifting resource memory. Let me know when the positive feelings are especially strong. Take your time.
Next I’m going to ask you to associate the feeling of the resource experience to a color. If your positive feeling were a color, what would it be? Go with your first association.
(Partner - Wait for a color)
And now, if that colorful feeling were to resonate to some part of your body, where would it resonate to the most? Go with your first association.
Would you be willing to let your body absorb more of that positive feeling from this experience?
(Partner - wait for an answer)
OK, then keep noticing how this experience makes you feel and you can let that colorful feeling begin to spread out into the rest of your body. Let me know when the feeling is firmly anchored in your body.
(Partner - Wait for a sign the chelator is finished.)
Now I have a very important question to ask you…………….If this colorful feeling in your body could act like a healing medicine in your unconscious………would you let it help you heal your target memory?
(Partner - Wait for an affirmation)
And for that to happen……would you let it remain in your body while the scene changes around you so that the color is still in your body while you are back in the target experience?
(Partner - Wait for an affirmation)
So….letting that happen…..with the colorful feeling in your body, let the scene change around you so that you see the sights, sounds, scent, and the full details of your target experience. Let me know when you have all of that together.
OK. Now focus on that scene and let that colorful feeling do what it will on its own. Just let it work without your having to do anything except track on my fingers while you think about both the color and that scene together.
Partner - Start a set of EM’s (eye-tracking movements). Each EM consists of a back and forth sweeping movement. Stop after 20 EM's..)
Stop. Now blank your mind. Tell me the first thing that comes into your mind…….any thought, feeling, memory or sensation. Don’t edit. Just the very first thing you’re aware of.
(Partner - Wait for the chelator to respond even if he says his mind is blank)
OK. Think about that.
(Partner - Start a new set of 20 EM’s while the chelator tracks with his eyes.)
Stop. Blank your mind. Then tell me the first thing that comes.
Go with that.
(Partner - Start a new set of 20 EM’s while the chelator tracks with his eyes.)
Stop. Blank your mind. What comes now?
Go with that.
(Partner - Start a new set of 20 EM’s while the chelator tracks with his eyes.)
Stop. Blank your mind. What comes now?
Go with that.
(Partner - Start a new set of 20 EM’s while the chelator tracks with his eyes.)
Stop. Blank your mind. What comes now?
Now, please go to your second resource experience. Let me know when you have its most inspiring moment real clear as if it's happening now.
Next I'm going to ask for you to associate the positive feeling of this resource experience to a color. If your positive feeling were a color, what would it be ? Go with your first association.

(Partner - Wait for an affirmation)

Now I'm going to ask that you go to your third resource experience. Let me know when you have its most inspiring moment real clear as if it's happening now.
Now would you be willing to associate the positive feeling of this resource experience to a color. If your positive feeling were a color, what would it be ? Go with your first association.
(Partner - Wait for a color.)

Stop. Blank your mind. What comes now?
OK. Now will you please return to the original target memory that you have found so challenging? Let me know when you're there.
(Partner - wait until the chelater affirms.)
OK. Now will you please return to the original target memory that you have found so challenging? Let me know when you're there.
(Partner - wait until the chelater affirms.)
Now let yourself notice sights, sounds, scent and details of this experience for about a half minute
(Partner - Wait about 30 seconds until moving on to the next instruction)
This next step is especially interesting because I get to share my feelings about what I've seen you experience and what you've shared. Please give me a minute to organize my thoughts.
(Partner - Take your time to reflect back on whatever feelings you might have experienced during this procerss. It is important that you DO NOT try to figure out what to say to try to help the other. DO NOT not take responsibility for "fixing" things. Just focus on whatever feelings you did have during this chelation process (compassion, sadness, anger, remembered fear of your own, whatever) Then share feelings and what the other said that evoked them. Both of you may talk about them back and forth. After about 5 minutes at most, go to the next step.
OK. Now will you return to the target memory again? Let me know when you're there.
(Partner - wait until the chelater affirms.)
Now let yourself notice the sights, sounds, scent and details of this experience for about a half minute again.

Now please return to your first positive resource memory we visited the first time around. Let me know when you're there.
(Partner - Wait for an affirmation)
OK. You can let the color of those positive feelings return to you and let yourself enjoy them for a minute or two.
(Partner - After about a minute or two, ask him/her if he/she is ready to leave. Then give him/her a congratulations for having the courage to work through some pain)
(You're all done !)
